Sara Harley: In Waiting
photograph
This porch is in need of some tender loving care. Peeling paint and damaged wood tell a story of neglect. But sometimes you need to look beyond the cosmetics. There are a pair of chairs sitting together, waiting for friendly companions, showing that all is not forgotten and lost.

These pretty pink primroses are singing, "Come up these steps!  There's a friendly face just inside the door and a porch swing just outside the edges of the canvas.  Sit down and enjoy. Don't be in a hurry."

I do love a good porch.

Your Art Inspired by When Life Gives You Lemons...

Whitney Eaton: The Grass Is Always Greener...
Oil on canvas, 16x20
There are some old sayings that are pretty good reminders for life. When life gives you lemons, make lemonade… The early bird catches the worm… A penny saved is a penny earned… The grass is always greener on the other side… Even though we sometimes realize that the grass on the other side isn’t that different from the grass where we are, these two donkeys sure do think the grass on the other side is worth reaching for.

Lynn Hanousek: Tomato Trilogy
8x10 acrylic on stretched canvas

Planting a garden is something we do every summer, but this year we really got into it and spent more time and effort to maintain our small patch of urban farmland. When I saw Helen’s “When Life Gives You Lemons”, I chuckled and thought, “Around here it's ‘When life hands you tomatoes.’” We grew three varieties: Early Girl, Roma, and Cherry Tomatoes. There are so many things that tomatoes can be used for, but we prefer a plain old tomato sandwich with lots of mayonnaise...summer comfort food. Much needed these days!

Sara Harley: A Lemonade Day
altered photograph
Recently I was in a morning funk, feeling down and out of sorts. I was tempted to cancel my daily walk routine, but my four legged walking partner kept checking in with me so we headed out. It didn't take long...about 10 minutes of walking down the trail...before I stopped brooding and started to look at the beautiful nature around me. I felt happy, and the yellow wild tansy seemed to echo my lifting spirits. It was a lemonade day.

Helen Eaton: Lupine Landscape
Oil on Canvas, 10"x 20"
I’d never seen lupines until five years ago when we took a trip to Maine. We loved it. One unexpected treat was the lupines... everywhere! I fell in love with them and took many, many photos with the thought that one day I'd use one as a reference for a painting.  Sara's Freedom was just the motivation I needed to finally paint lupines.
I look forward to the day that we'll feel freedom to travel once again.  Maybe we'll take a trip back to Maine and enjoy the lupines.

This photo made me think of fields of lavender with the wind blowing and all the cares of the world flying free. I have wanted to paint this lady for quite some time as I loved the feeling of freedom as her hair flies around her head.

Your Art Inspired by Garden Friends

Helen Eaton: Squash Blossom
Oil on Canvas, 8"x 10"

I have five squash plants. (Honestly, that's probably about four too many!) The plants are huge... long thick stems, wide lush leaves, and huge yellow blossoms hidden underneath.

Of all my vegetables, it wouldn’t have occurred to me to put a squash on canvas; however, the description of Sara’s Garden Friends made me notice again how pretty a squash plant can be. Under her photograph, she wrote, "...catmint is a good companion plant for squash. Apparently it's also a good companion plant for butterflies."

Hmmm... What’s missing?  Her picture shows the catmint and the butterfly... but... What about the squash?

I decided to add a vegetable garden this year, and in my research
I read that catmint is a good companion plant for squash.
Apparently it’s also a good companion plant for butterflies.
