About Helen & Sara

A bit about Helen:
Helen Eaton
It was never my hope or dream to become an artist. On February 22, 2007 I attended a painting class. I completed my first painting then and couldn't wait to begin another. Thirteen years and five hundred paintings later, I feel the same way... I can't wait to begin another.

While I do have pride in my finished paintings, it's the process that draws me in. I love each step of the process...choosing an image, blocking in values and shapes, blending colors, noticing details, changing, adding, taking away... until finally it's time to sign my name.

The images I love to paint are those that tell stories, those that make me wonder... imagine... ask a question... I hope that my paintings make others wonder, imagine, and ask a question.

Although it took a few years and dozens of paintings, I believe I've learned to trust in the process. Paintings do go through ugly stages, but those stages are necessary parts of the process. It's always a favorite moment when a stroke of paint finally brings life into the painting. That's when I usually say aloud, "Well, hello there!" and smile at the canvas.

My goal is to finish the one I'm working on, smile at the canvas when it's finished, then begin another.

A bit about Sara:
Sara Harley
I have always carried a camera, documenting life and capturing memories. I am drawn to images that are timeless and minimalist, with a bent to the natural world and life on the coast.
When diagnosed with breast cancer in 2010, my personal battle helped me forge a new path as an inspirational writer. This eventually led to my newspaper column"In Focus", where I shared my love of photography and life in Nova Scotia.
I have been fortunate to have my photographs exhibited in many group exhibits, and hosted my first solo exhibit, called Roots+Wings, in 2018.
In September 2018, six images from my Stroke of Emotions series were selected for a book called Seeing in SIXES 2018, published by LensWork. The project was also awarded Nominee in the International 5th Annual Fine Art Photography Awards, Conceptual Photography. I have been thrilled to have my photographs published by PhotoEd Magazine, Understorey Magazine, and used on a cover for a book by Margaret Atwood.
I continue to create photographic art and verse to illustrate a range of emotions. My images range from dark and brooding to light and inspirational, but always come from my heart.
